Research Interests
I am interested in soil science, focusing in the sub-area of soil chemistry/biogeochemistry. During my current PhD program, I am studying the effects of iron oxides in soil carbon dynamics. I am a member of the NSF-founded Critical Zone Observatories (CZO) network. To elucidate mechanisms of Fe-C coupling in soils, I have conducted three laboratory experiments involving redox fluctuations and I am conducting two field experiments, one in a tropical forest in Puerto Rico and one in a subtropical forest in South Carolina. In my laboratory studies, I found that the dynamics of redox fluctuations change the iron reduction rates and directly affect the mineralization, preservation, and storage of organic carbon in soils. In the field, I am evaluating the coupling effect of iron and carbon during redox fluctuations in soils at natural conditions. In my Masters program at UGA, I worked with phytoremediation of chlorobenzene and benezene contaminated soils/water using Eucalyptus and Pinus trees. As an undergraduate (in Brazil), I spent three years working on pedology projects and had the opportunity to be a tutor on several occasions. I am fluent in three languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese (native).
